A Life Saved on the St. Mary’s Inlet Jetties

What started as a day on the water quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency.

On May 31, 2026, three people became stranded on the St. Mary’s Inlet Jetties as severe weather moved in. Heavy rain, rising tides, and fading daylight and created increasingly dangerous conditions. Before help could arrive, one member of the group was swept into the water by powerful waves. Without a life jacket, he disappeared beyond the sight of his group as well as first responders.

Nassau County Fire Rescue, alongside several partner agencies, immediately launched a coordinated search. Despite rough conditions and limited visibility, crews searched the water using a Foundation-granted rescue boat equipped with advanced electronics, scene lighting, and specialized water rescue equipment.

Then, they heard a faint voice.

The crew quickly located the man in the water, safely brought him aboard their rescue boat, and transported him to shore, where he received medical care.
