GAS MONITOR SAVES SIX RESIDENTS FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

GAS MONITOR SAVES SIX RESIDENTS FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

West Palm Beach, FL

Thanks to a Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation grant, the West Palm Beach Fire Department (WPBFD) received 16 gas detectors in late 2025—equipment that proved lifesaving during a carbon monoxide emergency on February 3, 2026.

WPBFD crews responded to a local residence after reports of respiratory distress. Upon arrival, firefighters found multiple people suffering from headaches, dizziness and nausea. Using the awarded gas monitor, crews detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide—a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly.

The department immediately evacuated the home, administered oxygen to those affected and transported one adult and five minors to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. Thanks to early detection and the swift response of first responders, everyone involved was expected to make a full recovery.
