Granted UTV Enables Critical Backcountry Rescue

Granted UTV Enables Critical Backcountry Rescue

Old Town, ME

Thanks to a recent grant, Old Town Fire Rescue in Maine was able to place a new utility terrain vehicle (UTV) into service — and it has already proven to be a lifesaving asset.

Since receiving the UTV, it has already been used in three rescue missions. During a recent incident, crews responded to a call involving a teenage girl who had crashed her dirt bike deep in a wooded area, more than a quarter mile from the nearest road. Due to her injuries, she was unable to walk and needed to remain fully immobilized on a backboard to ensure her safety.

Because of the rugged terrain, traditional rescue vehicles couldn’t reach the patient. The new UTV proved essential, giving first responders safe and timely access to the remote location and a critical path to care.

Granted Equipment Used:
Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV): A maneuverable vehicle allowing for rapid response to off-road emergencies and natural disasters, as well as easier access at large events.
