Thanks to the generosity of donors nationwide, the Harlingen Police Department in Texas was awarded 10 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and 350 tourniquets through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation’s grants program.
Months later, police officers responded to an emergency situation where a man was bleeding and lying on the ground with a laceration. The two responding officers worked together to place a tourniquet and apply gauze to the affected area. EMS later arrived and transported the patient to a local hospital. An officer was advised by emergency room staff that the tourniquet was placed on in such a timely manner that it contributed to saving the man’s life.
“The use of tourniquets by law enforcement has increased the survival rate of people with serious injuries by providing assistance in the quickest time possible. We are very grateful for receiving the tourniquets and being able to provide assistance to the public when needed.” – Chief Michael Kester, Harlingen Police Department
